Can anyone participate in the 2019 Alberta Orienteering Championships?

Yes any member of FWOC, EOOC, AOA or another Canadian or international orienteering club can compete at the 2019 AOCs. You can race or run or walk for fun in the Open categories.
Can I register on the day of the event?

If my child participates in SOGO, can he or she race at the 2019 Alberta Champs?
If your child is in SOGO now, he or she is also a member of FWOC. So yes your child can participate! If your child is in SOGO 1 or 2, they could run a beginner course. There are 2 levels of beginner courses. SOGO 2 participants might also run an Intermediate course depending on their skill. Talk to your child's coach or to Bridie to find out what might be the best level for them.

If my child is in SOGO, can I participate in the Alberta Champs?
Anyone can participate as long as they are a member of FWOC (or another orienteering club). You can join FWOC and come run with us!
Can I just follow my child on their course?
Yes! If you just want to follow (shadow) your child, you can. There is no charge provided the child's race has been paid. If you have also paid to compete, you must finish your course before you shadow your child. FYI, to be eligible for awards, a child must run in his/her age class on his/her own.

How different is the Middle Event from a city event?
There are some similarities. The Middle Event has 8 courses, and Course 1, 2 and 3 will be very similar to the Courses in a city event. C4 and C5 might be considered advanced for a city race. The elite courses (7 & 8) will be harder.
I am a beginner orienteer. Will there be any help for beginners?
Yes. Ask at registration. Make sure you give yourself lots of lead time in case you have to wait for a volunteer to be available.
