Arena
The arena for the Middle is 400m from the parking.
Remote Start
The Middle start / call up is 100m from the arena.

Trails

In the area of the Middle courses, the representation of trails is good.  However, many of the narrow cutlines shown with the "Narrow Ride" symbol are very indistinct.
Vegetation
Vegetation is mostly runnable forest with some areas of slower travel indicated by green shading or green vertical lines.
Terrain
C1, C5 and C6 are on nearly level terrain with subtle hills and depressions. The other courses also go up some larger hills overlooking the Sheep River Valley.
Water Features
Open marshes are some of the most distinct features on the map.  The only stream is the Sheep River at the south edge of the map. Some of the small ponds are presently dry; with precipitation before the event, this may change. Conversely, small depressions may fill with water in the event of rain.
Shared Park Use
Please note that this park is often used by horseback riders; they have a designated campground at Sandy McNabb.  Please be respectful of all other park users.
Water
The Middle courses do not have any water stations.
Safety Bearing
North to the road.

Relay - Saturday, June 29, 4:30 - 6pm

Relay - Course Time Limit 1 Hour
4:30 - 5 pm: Relay Information Sharing
5 pm: Mass start
6 pm: Course closes

The Relay will be a fun 3-4 person team event designed with four legs:
  • Leg 1 - Beginner (TD1, handrails: trails, distinct vegetation boundary and fence), approx 600m, mass start
  • Leg 2 - Advanced (TD3+), approx 1600m
  • Leg 3 - Intermediate (TD 2-3), approx 1300m
  • Leg 4 - Advanced (TD3+), approx 1600m

Participants can form their own team or the organizers can help create teams.  If you only have 3 runners, the extra leg is the Beginner leg.  You must indicate your participation at Registration (Saturday, 10:30- 12:45) or before. Please let registration know what leg you would prefer to run: Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced.  Any young beginner can be shadowed. Teams will be finalized at Registration Saturday morning.

Course Details
  1. Flagging on course is only for M/F 10 and Beginners (Open 1).  On the control description, it looks like the picture on the right.  It means C1 orienteers must follow the orange & white ribbons for 100 meters to the next control.
  2. Open 5, Veterans (M/F 75 + and older), and orienteers in F55+ and M/F 65+ will have a separate start (with a remote start) and a smaller start window (10:30 - 11 am).  Transportation will be provided from the designated parking to the S2.  Please be available at 10am.
  3. Start 1 / call up is 40 meters from the parking.
  4. The Long Arena is 200m from the parking.
Trails
There has been some changes to trails throughout the map.
  1. Some trails are much more obvious now than when the map was made and some trails have all but disappeared.  This means some trails mapped as "distinct" are indistinct, and you may not notice them if you run acorss them at 90 degrees. Some indistinct trails are not readily noticeable even when you are on the trail!  Some trail junctions mapped as distinct (with black dashes touching) are indistinct.
  2. Cows frequently graze in this area so they have created new (unmapped) paths too.
  3. Horseback riders have widened some paths and caused uneven ground along the main paths.
Vegetation
  1. There is significant blow-down (that is not mapped) in some areas so not all white is as runnable as might be expected.
  2. Some small marshes appear as cup depressions when dry.
  3. Knolls are indistinct generally.
Terrain
The area incorporates both steep hills and flat terrain. Contours are very reliable.  Courses 2, 3, 4, 6b, 7 and 8 can expect progressively more climb as noted in the chart above.
Water Features
Water features were fairly reliable at the time of control checking; some minor changes from what appears on the map might be expected depending on recent precipitation.
Shared Park Use
Please note that this park is often used by horseback riders; they have a designated campground at Sandy McNabb.  Please be respectful of other park users.
Water
There will be water stations identified on the map.
Safety Bearing
South to the road.
